De mijn<\/p>\n

De prachtige S\u00e3o Domingos-mijn is een verlaten dagbouwmijn in de Alentejo, ooit verkend door Mason en Barry, een Brits bedrijf, dat in het midden van dit verlaten land een klein dorp cre\u00eberde.<\/p>\n

Vanwege de mineralen in de bodem laten de rivieren en ondiepe meren alle kleuren van de regenboog zien, van zandrood en geel tot druiven- en auberginepaars en saliegroen. Het donkere zwarte water schittert met een vleugje koper onder de uitgestrekte Alentejaanse hemel.<\/p>\n

Deze vindplaats is een van de vulkanische enorme sulfide-ertsafzettingen in de Iberische Pyrietgordel, die zich uitstrekt van Zuid-Portugal tot in Spanje.<\/p>\n

In 1854 begonnen Mason en Barry koper, zwavel en pyriet te winnen en dit naar Engeland en daarbuiten te transporteren, tot 1966. In de 107 jaar dat de mijn in S\u00e3o Domingos actief was, was het soms een van Europa's grootste in termen van productie en aantal werknemers, en op het hoogtepunt waren 16.000 mensen geassocieerd met de mijn.<\/p>\n

In het mijndorp bouwde het bedrijf een kerk, een school, een theater, het eerste elektriciteitsstation van de provincie en de eerste telefooncentrale. Er is ook een Engelse begraafplaats, waar mijnbeheerders en hun families, velen uit Cornwall, begraven liggen.<\/p>\n

Sinds de sluiting trekt de mijn toeristen. Het oude hoofdkantoor van mijnbouwbedrijf is omgebouwd tot een luxe hotel, waar we voor deze tour zullen verblijven.<\/p>\n

Mina de S\u00e3o Domingos ligt 180 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Lissabon, dicht bij de Spaanse grens, waar het uitgestrekte glooiende landschap een prachtig 'Wild West'-gevoel heeft.
\nGelegen aan de rand van het beschermde natuurgebied "Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana", en zelfs tot op zekere hoogte daarbinnen, blijft het landschap bezoekers verrassen met zijn rijkdom aan zeldzame vogelsoorten (bijv. ijsvogels, hoppen, wouwen, adelaars en de zeer ongrijpbare grote buster).<\/p>\n

De meren wemelen van de vissen en zijn zo schoon dat zelfs schildpadden er dol op zijn. De vallei van de Guadiana is een gebied van natuurlijke schoonheid dat nog nauwelijks wordt bezocht, vergelijkbaar met de manier waarop de Moezel zich ontvouwt.<\/p>\n

Het landschap heeft een adembenemende grootsheid, de horizon lijkt altijd oneindig en in het voorjaar verblindt de overvloed aan kleurrijke wilde bloemen de ogen.<\/p>\n
