A mina<\/p>\n

A bela Mina de S\u00e3o Domingos \u00e9 uma mina a c\u00e9u aberto deserta no Alentejo outrora explorada pela Mason e Barry, uma empresa brit\u00e2nica, que criou no meio desta terra deserta uma pequena aldeia.<\/p>\n

Por causa dos minerais do solo, os rios e lagos rasos exibem todas as cores do arco-\u00edris, de vermelhos e amarelos arenosos a roxos de uva e berinjela e verdes de salva. A \u00e1gua escura e negra brilha com um toque de cobre sob o vasto c\u00e9u alentejano.<\/p>\n

Este local \u00e9 um dos dep\u00f3sitos vulcanog\u00eanicos maci\u00e7os de min\u00e9rio de sulfeto na Faixa Piritosa Ib\u00e9rica, que se estende do sul de Portugal at\u00e9 a Espanha.<\/p>\n

Em 1854, Mason e Barry come\u00e7aram a extrair cobre, enxofre e pirita e transport\u00e1-los para a Inglaterra e al\u00e9m, at\u00e9 1966. Por vezes, durante os 107 anos de atividade da mina de S\u00e3o Domingos, foi uma das maiores da Europa em termos de produ\u00e7\u00e3o e n\u00famero de empregados e, em seu pico, 16.000 pessoas estavam associadas \u00e0 mina.<\/p>\n

Na aldeia mineira, a empresa construiu uma igreja, uma escola, um teatro, a primeira central el\u00e9trica da prov\u00edncia e a primeira central telef\u00f3nica. H\u00e1 tamb\u00e9m um cemit\u00e9rio ingl\u00eas, onde os gerentes da mina e suas fam\u00edlias, muitos da Cornualha, est\u00e3o enterrados.<\/p>\n

Desde o fechamento, a mina atrai turistas. A antiga sede da mineradora foi convertida em um hotel de luxo, onde nos hospedaremos para este passeio.<\/p>\n

A Mina de S\u00e3o Domingos fica a 180 quil\u00f3metros a sudeste de Lisboa, perto da fronteira espanhola, onde a vasta paisagem ondulada tem um maravilhoso toque de \u201cVelho Oeste\u201d.
\nSituada no limite da \u00e1rea protegida \u201cParque Natural do Vale do Guadiana\u201d, e de facto dentro dela, o campo continua a surpreender os visitantes com a sua riqueza de esp\u00e9cies raras de aves (por exemplo, guarda-rios, poupa, papagaio, \u00e1guias e o grande destruidor muito evasivo).<\/p>\n

Os lagos fervilham de peixes e s\u00e3o t\u00e3o limpos que at\u00e9 as tartarugas gostam deles. O vale do Guadiana \u00e9 uma zona de beleza natural ainda pouco frequentada, compar\u00e1vel ao Mosela na forma como se desenvolve.<\/p>\n
