Madeira, known as the garden Island is a dream walker’s destination.

The canyons, impressive landscapes and waterfalls hidden in Madeira’s lush forests and mountains are a treat to the keen hiker. The views are absolutely breathtaking and in some walks you’re mostly above the clouds, in magical settings.

This tour is based in Machico, where the island’s discoverers first landed in 1419, and in Funchal, the capital, a city full of historical buildings and lush gardens.

From here we’ll have access to a wide range of magnificent and spectacular walks.

Includes a day in the far eastern end of the island where the promontory of Ponta São Lourenço provides a wild and breezy walk quite different from anywhere else on the island. The nature here is rough and unspoiled, with the rock formations and the color contrast with the blue wild ocean water being a true sight to see!

Following the levadas (irrigation channels), among the Laurissilva Forest – UNESCO World Heritage Site, and hearing the sound of water and the murmur of the forest, we will have a lovely week of walks in the east part of the Island.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival at Funchal Airport

Arrival at Funchal Airport. Transfer to Machico (around 20min). If time allows a short introductory walk will be offered.

Day 2 – Ponta de S. Lourenço Walk

A joy for the senses as we step in a different world.
The driest part of the island, this volcanic eastern peninsula juts dramatically out to sea.
High rock stacks, crashing waves and rainbow colours banding the high cliffs stun the senses on this accessible and yet stunningly surprising walk.

Day 3 – North Coast walk

A fitting walk as we follow one of the great Madeira walks high above the North coast. This recently improved route enables us to appreciate one of the most exciting walks of the island and yet is now accessible to most.
Intimate trails, high cliff paths, and the island and the ocean laid out at your feet.
Overnight Machico. Dinner at local restaurant.

One of our wonderful and flexible walks. This classic walk between Ribeiro Frio and Portela indulges us in staggering views of the north coast. It offers intimate woodland trails and a sparkling levada meandering across the lush mountain slopes.
At the popular café in Portela, again, we can choose to relax and finish our walk, whilst the hardier souls can follow the ancient trail descending from this path to the coastal village of Porto Cruz.

The looming peak of Pico Grande, high above, is ever present to tempt the adventurous.
